World Masterpiece Theater & A Dog of Flanders: Settei and Unique F.C. Activities

(The cover for Nippon Animation's A Dog of Flanders setting documents. This booklet, dated at 1979, was used in house for animators to reference but ended up in a lucky young woman's hands.)

The first major contest I won was an art related one, though it was far in between the next and the next. I had to have been around 7 or 8 years old; my mother worked for a food service company and it was our job to illustrate what it was she did for a living. Between me and my sibling, we used every medium to our disposal and created two large cornucopias full of fruit, vegetables and raw meat of all things.

While we were given two gift cards for Toys-R-Us, I kept chasing contests into my teens and even adult years. I remember designing a sunhat on Polyvore of all places and having a company send me my very own design. In the years of undergrad, juried competitions yielded more prestige and cash prizes. So, what of my other hobby?  Has being obsessed with production documents gotten me anything of note?

Back in 2024, I acquired this setting booklet from M as we organized during my final week in Hyogo. His friend, a former member of the Raideen Fan Club (RFC) among others, had passed some years prior and had left part of her estate to him. While M didn't part with everything, he did offer me a selection of works so long as I provided a means for them to be shared. I was floored looking at the breadth of experience of a life well lived and cherished - many of the documents I've shared already have come from this particular estate, however, I had run into an issue when I returned stateside.

My trusty two in one printer and scanner had a bed that simply was too small and didn't do several of these documents justice. Much to my chagrin and post-trip financial situation, I hadn't invested much into getting a new scanner. Between hopping between this and that, it wouldn't be until this very month that my good friend Tosaku gifted me a scanner with a bed large enough to tackle this project.

This particular booklet was given out, per M's recollection, was given away in a contest held by Kei Tomiyama (富山 敬) and Makio Inoue (井上 真樹夫) for Inoue's official FC, with the main characters drafted by Yasuji Mori (森康二). Scanned natively at 600 DPI, I've had to wait to finish this one as I only got an appropriate scanner bed appropriate for it. The paper was a nice shade of beige and was original to the document. Enjoy!
